The members and invited guests of the 2018 Pebble Beach AFAS Exhibit included works from Bruce Wheeler.
Bruce Wheeler’s sculptures prompt the viewer’s imagination to visualize situations and experiences involving sculptures of cars which no longer exist except in rare photos. He captures and conveys the visual excitement of these vintage vehicles.
His early years at GM Design and later experience with Courtroom graphics and models, make it possible for him to create three-dimensional images from minimal photos and other details. He creates directly in metal, copper and brass sheet. Each panel is cut out of sheet material, hammered, formed and silver soldered to the adjoining panel. They are done individually in editions of 12 pieces. While similar, each one is a “one-of.” They may require 2 to 6 weeks to complete, depending on the size and complexity. Prices range from $2-5 thousand dollars.
The patinas are an important element of the piece. The “worked” copper acquires certain colors and textures which are retained and serve as a base for additional layers of transparent enamel washes. The copper structure becomes the “canvas” for the enamel painting and beautifully conveys the car in an “experienced state of condition”.
Eclectic in his choice of subjects, Bruce targets cars that were historically significant and demonstrated innovation.
The piece in the foreground is the “1909 Blitzen Benz”, 24″ long, number 3 of 12 at $3,800. The piece in the back is the 1907 Thomas Flyer, Winner of the New York to Paris race of 1907. It is number 2 of 12 in a larger 27″ size, at $5,200.
Sculptures have been commissioned by patrons in the U.S., Europe, Canada, England, Japan, South America and by the California Mille for its’ participants.
